Data Preprocessing: Scaling is Critically Important for SVR

  • Distance-Based Algorithm: SVR, like Support Vector Machines (SVMs) in general, is fundamentally a distance-based algorithm. It relies on calculating distances (e.g., Euclidean distance) between data points in the feature space, especially when using kernel functions (like RBF kernel) to map data to higher dimensions. Feature scaling directly affects how distances are calculated. You can inspect svr_model.support_vectors_, svr_model.n_support_, and svr_model.dual_coef_ attributes of a trained SVR model, but these are more technical details of the SVM optimization process and less directly interpretable in terms of feature effects in a simple way.

For non-linear SVR, the best way to understand and interpret the model is often through visualization of the predicted regression curve (as we did in the plotting example), rather than trying to directly interpret coefficients in the original feature space.
